THE HUNTERS’ COMPASSION

Skip Essex and John Dugmore (my father) were reunited at Meno A Kwena Tented Camp after more than twenty years since they hunted together here in Botswana some years ago when Botswana was statistically the poorest country in Africa. Skip is an American who came on a hunting safari back in the sixties Africa, the heyday of the ‘white hunter’ in the heart of ‘deepest darkest’ Africa. He fell in love with the idea of the hunter lifestyle in Africa. He became a professional hunter, and invested in other businesses, not all related to the glamour of the profession he loved, – fuel stations, taxidermy, alcoholic beverages, real estate. Skip is an investor in things that turn him on, beautiful things, and hunting was beautiful in those grand days, especially in Botswana’s vast and unknown wilderness. There was nowhere like it.
